Blumenthal Welcomes 2020 Jockeying: “It’s Never Too Early”June 29, 2018
The senior senator from Connecticut seemed to welcome the jockeying among Democrats for the upcoming presidential race. His colleague from Connecticut, Chris Murphy, may be among the candidates.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) took a rare public position on the upcoming presidential race this week, telling Politico “it’s never too early” for Democrats to start jockeying for 2020.
“The most common mantra around here is that the presidential race starts too early,” Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said. “But it begins when it begins. And let’s face it, it’s never too early. Because people need to begin working, and I’m a great believer in starting whenever it feels right.”
It’s unclear who Blumenthal favors, but he may come out for his colleague Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) if Murphy decides to run.
Blumenthal’s imprimatur will matter, too, if not for the candidate he endorses than for Blumenthal himself. If the senior senator from Connecticut picks right, it’s not extraordinary to think he would be on a Democratic president’s shortlist for attorney general of the U.S.
