Bombshell: Is Aetna Leaving Connecticut?

Kevin Rennie, of Daily Ructions, reported on Tuesday night that Aetna is leaning toward a move from Hartford to New York City.

Aetna, which employs about 6,000 people in Connecticut and is headquartered in Hartford, may move to New York City soon, according to Kevin Rennie of the blog Daily Ructions.

Rennie reported the bombshell rumor on Tuesday night:

New York is far ahead of Boston in the competition for Hartford-based Aetna’s new headquarters, Daily Ructions can report. After 164 years in Hartford, the insurance giant invited proposals from Boston and New York. The city that never sleeps is soon expected to win a public acknowledgement of its victory.

Though an Aetna spokesman refused to comment “on rumors and speculation” in statements to the press on Wednesday morning, the news sent shockwaves through the capital city.

As several outlets have pointed out, Aetna would be the second departure in three two years of a national, name-brand company from Hartford. General Electric moved its headquarters from Hartford to Boston this year.
