The Connecticut senator and possible 2020 presidential candidate weighed in to New York Magazine for a new profile on former President Barack Obama.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) weighed in on the post-presidency tenure of Barack Obama for a new profile on Obama published in New York Magazine this weekend.

Murphy, clearly eyeing the future of the Democratic Party – and, possibly, his own role in it – talked to New York Magazine about what role he thinks ex-President Obama should play in the Democrats’ 2020 effort to retake the White House.

Murphy’s thought? President Obama should help Democrats construct an economic message.

“What we need President Obama’s help with is creating a contrasting economic message heading into 2020,” says Connecticut senator Chris Murphy. “What Obama was brilliant at in 2012 was making that election with Romney all about an economic contrast, making Romney be the candidate of the economic elites and making Obama be the candidate of Ohio, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. That’s a contrast that we didn’t make effectively in 2016 and need to make more effectively in 2020.”

It’s the only mention Murphy merits in the profile, even as author Gabriel Debenedetti name-checks some Democrats Obama thinks will play a role in the party’s future.

Still, Murphy’s inclusion is notable, and provides a strong hint that he’s thinking about the party’s future.

Does Murphy see himself as playing a major role in how the Democrats approach 2020, possibly as a presidential candidate himself? We’ll have to wait to find out.
