Corey to Murphy: Apologize to Families of “Real Heroes” Who Died Looking for BergdahlOctober 17, 2017
Republican U.S. Senate candidate Matt Corey did not hold back criticizing Chris Murphy for a three-year-old tweet calling Bowe Bergdahl an "American hero."
Monday’s guilty plea by deserter Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl raised a spotlight on Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who in 2014 tweeted of Bergdahl:
An American hero is coming home. http://t.co/jbwcNdVBvA

One of Murphy’s opponents in his 2018 re-election effort, Republican Matt Corey, asked Murphy to apologize on Monday to the “real heroes … who died searching for a traitor,” and their families.
“As a U.S Navy veteran, I am appalled that Chris Murphy would denigrate the valor of every one of the thousands of our courageous combat veterans by calling a cowardly deserter/traitor a hero,” Corey said, in a release.
“Chris Murphy should admit his mistake immediately and apologize to the real heroes and their families who died searching for a traitor.”
In the last line, Corey linked to a TIME story with the headline: “The 6 U.S. Soldiers Who Died Searching for Bowe Bergdahl.”
The charged issue may come up again in the 2018 campaign between Murphy and Corey, now that Bergdahl pled guilty.
