Did Murphy Just Give CT Mag His Clearest Answer Yet on 2020?

Connecticut Magazine asked Chris Murphy about a presidential run in their new profile of him, published Monday. Murphy's direct answer may surprise you.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) told Connecticut Magazine, in an interview published Monday by the outlet, that he doesn’t think a 2020 presidential run is “in the card for me.”

The magazine noted a woman had stopped Murphy on his walk through the state “to beg him to run in 2020.” Murphy demurred in his response to the woman, but he clarified to Connecticut Magazine that he doesn’t see a presidential run in his immediate future.

Later, he says, “I don’t think it’s in the cards for me. My focus is really on this election and re-election race and I think it would be pretty foolish to be thinking about anything other than that. I’ve been pretty clear but I’m sure people are going to continue asking me about running.”

It’s the clearest indication yet that Murphy may not run for president in 2020, but don’t take it to the bank.

In 2006, then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) told Tim Russert of “Meet the Press” that “I will not” run for president in 2008. He joked about many people asking him to run, before saying he needed to come up with new ways to say ‘no.’
