Murphy After 2015 SOTU: “Time to Put Politics Aside”; 2018 SOTU? “Ugh.”

A tale of two tweets for Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.).

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) has dramatically changed his tone about presidents’ State of the Union addresses, now that Republican Donald Trump is in the White House.

In 2015, after Democrat Barack Obama’s State of the Union address, Murphy sounded like a moderate bridge-builder, with a clarion call to “put politics aside & work together.”

Flash forward three years, though, and Murphy isn’t feeling quite so bipartisan anymore.

The junior senator, who is reportedly mulling a run for president in 2020, had one word to start his response to Trump’s first State of the Union address: “Ugh.”

Murphy was also selective in his criticism, ignoring Trump’s comments on the economy, most foreign affairs, the opioid crisis, trade, Trump’s anecdotes about presidential guests at the speech, and a number of other subjects.

Regardless, it seems most Americans disagreed with Murphy anyway. A flash poll conducted following Trump’s speech found three-quarters of Americans approved of the speech.
