Murphy Makes Ballotpedia’s List of 55 Potential Dem Presidential CandidatesNovember 19, 2018
It's not a comprehensive list, nor is it the definitive list of 2020 candidates. But Murphy's inclusion ensures he'll continue to stay in the conversation.
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) is on Ballotpedia’s new list of 55 potential Democratic presidential candidates, along with 11 of his colleagues in the U.S. Senate.
The Washington Examiner‘s Paul Bedard was among the first to report that Ballotpedia, “the encyclopedia of American politics, has just compiled the latest list of major politicians, business executives, climate change advocates, and entertainers who have expressed interest in running.”
Murphy is on there, with the apparent evidence for his conclusion being The Washington Post‘s September 2017 list of “top 15 possible 2020 Democratic nominees, ranked.” Murphy was surprisingly ranked third on that list.
The other U.S. senators on the list?
- Cory Booker (D-N.J.)
- Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio)
- Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.)
- Kamala Harris (D-Calif.)
- Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.)
- Tim Kaine (D-Va.)
- Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.)
- Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.)
- Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii)
- Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.)
- Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.)
Booker, Gillibrand, Harris, Sanders, and Warren are all considered top-tier candidates. Murphy would have to leapfrog all of them, in addition to former vice president Joe Biden and several other national Democrats, to win the nomination, should he run.
