Murphy Releases First Ad of 2018 Reelection Effort, Focusing on His Walk Across CT

The junior senator is running for reelection in 2018 – but rumor has it he has his eyes set on a more significant office in the years to come.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) released his first ad of the 2018 cycle this week, an apparent effort to remind Connecticut voters he wants to be a “strong voice in Washington” for the state.

The ad highlights Murphy’s annual walk across Connecticut, and touches on issues like Murphy’s opposition to “Trumpcare” and his support for gun control.

It’s unclear how big the ad buy is, but various data points suggest Murphy should not be concerned about reelection at this time. His campaign committee has $8.5 million cash on hand as of June 30, and a Quinnipiac poll released last week found him up 59-31 on Republican Matthew Corey in the U.S. Senate race.

Indeed, Murphy may be more focused on a potential 2020 presidential run. Given how early presidential cycles can start, the junior senator may need to start preparing for a run now if he’s going to announce an effort in 2019.
