New Stefanowski Ad Touts Endorsement From Dem With Well-Known Last Name

The new ad may be Stefanowski's closing bid to win crossover votes in the Connecticut gubernatorial contest.

On Thursday, Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Stefanowski released an ad featuring Jim Grasso, the son of the late Democratic governor Ella Grasso. In the ad, Grasso endorses Stefanowski, contrasting the Republican’s platform (“cut taxes and create jobs”) with Democrat Ned Lamont’s support for taxes and tolls.

In a statement accompanying the ad, Stefanowski thanked Jim Grasso for his endorsement, and praised Ella Grasso’s record as governor.

“Ella Grasso was a great governor for our state and I am pleased that Jim Grasso has decided to back my campaign to serve in that same role. The stakes in this election are high. We are building a bi-partisan coalition behind my campaign to cut taxes and revitalize our economy. People of both parties are coming together to say enough is enough. We must deliver fundamental tax reform to Connecticut to get our economy back on track and I am the only candidate with a plan to do so.”

The ad may be a last bid by Stefanowski to win crossover Democratic votes, and left-leaning unaffiliated voters, in the gubernatorial contest. There are far more registered Democrats in Connecticut (771,412 as of November 1, 2017) than there are registered Republicans (453,625).

In the last Quinnipiac poll of likely voters in Connecticut, Stefanowski earned the support of three percent of Democrats. Lamont earned the support of two percent of Republicans. Lamont was beating Stefanowski among independent voters, 42-36.
