Pelosi’s #2 Comes to CT to Campaign With Hayes, Who Supports Single-PayerOctober 11, 2018
Steny Hoyer, who wants to be the next majority leader of the House of Representatives, is in Farmington on Thursday to campaign for Fifth Congressional District candidate Jahana Hayes.
House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), deputy to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), is in Farmington on Thursday to campaign with Democratic Fifth Congressional District candidate Jahana Hayes and Comptroller Kevin Lembo (D-Conn.).
Hoyer, Hayes, and Lembo are discussing the Affordable Care Act (ACA) – colloquially known as Obamacare – at UConn Health.
Though the discussion centers around the ACA, the candidates may pivot to broader liberal efforts to expand the government’s role in health care. Hayes, running for the seat being vacated by Rep. Elizabeth Esty (D-Conn.), supports “moving towards a single-payer healthcare system,” according to her website. Lembo wrote an op-ed for the CT Post in June 2017 that argued for a public option in Connecticut.
Hoyer, for his part, could be a powerful ally for Hayes if she makes it to Congress. Hoyer has made clear he wants to be House majority leader if the Democrats retake the House this year. That would make Hoyer the second-ranking member of the House, behind speaker. Hoyer is supporting Pelosi for speaker.
