Politico: Murphy ‘Grits His Teeth’ on Trump and North Korea

“I can’t bring myself to engage in a certain blind opposition simply because I’m worried," Murphy told Politico.

Is Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) coming around to President Trump’s approach on North Korea?

Maybe not, but he’s not engaging “in a certain blind opposition,” the junior senator and possible 2020 Trump opponent told Politico this week.

Murphy’s comments were part of a broader Politico piece on Democrats “grit[ting] their teeth and cheer[ing] for Trump on North Korea.”

Elana Schor and Heather Caygle reported on Murphy’s comments:

“I really worry that the president is so desperate to get a deal that he’s going to sign a pretty terrible one that would guarantee North Korea remains a nuclear power,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said. “I also worry he’ll sign a deal that will give away far too much of our influence in the region, allowing China to run roughshod over its neighbors.”

“At the same time,” Murphy added, “I can’t bring myself to engage in a certain blind opposition simply because I’m worried.”

This may be the closest Murphy gets to praising Trump on something, especially if he decides to challenge the president in a few years.

Whether Trump’s negotiations with North Korea and its leader, Kim Jong-un, lead to peace between the Koreas, and between North Korea and the U.S., are different questions entirely.
