Trump Uses New Nickname Against Blumenthal, in Latest Broadside With Inaccuracies

The president tweeted about a Richard Blumenthal television appearance, called him "the Dick," and aired some errors or inaccuracies about the senator's Vietnam controversy.

President Trump again attacked Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) on Twitter over the weekend, with more vitriol than usual and several inaccuracies, or falsehoods, about Blumenthal’s Vietnam controversy.

In a two-tweet broadside against Blumenthal on Saturday, Trump called him “the Dick,” and claimed Blumenthal woke up from a dream about his Vietnam service only to scream that “HE LIED.”

Trump has regularly aired inaccuracies, falsehoods, or lies (depending on how one views the president’s motives) about the Vietnam scandal that briefly consumed Blumenthal’s first U.S. Senate campaign in 2010.

As Reclaim Connecticut has noted before, Blumenthal did spend several years suggesting to crowds in Connecticut that he “served in Vietnam” even though he never served in Vietnam. Blumenthal obtained five deferments, according to The New York Times.

However, the president has regularly suggested that Blumenthal recounted fantastical stories about “bullets whizzing” by his head, which there is no evidence of Connecticut’s senior senator doing. Trump has also regularly suggested that Blumenthal cried or wept when telling people that he misled others about his service, which Blumenthal did did not do.

Blumenthal has emerged as a key political adversary to the president, and is playing a leading role in more than one lawsuit targeting Trump and his administration.
